Oil seals are mechanical components used to seal lubricating oil and are commonly referred to as shaft seals. The primary function of an oil seal is to create a linear contact area between the main lip and the rotating shaft, forming an extremely thin oil film. This oil film not only allows the main lip to move with relative motion, reducing friction, but also prevents lubricating oil from leaking, ensuring effective sealing.
Oil seal leakage is mainly caused by damage to the oil film on the main lip, with a small portion resulting from improper fitting between the outer ring and the housing. To prevent oil seal leakage, we have analyzed the factors affecting reliability from the perspective of oil seal assembly.
Important considerations for oil seal assembly include:

1. Check for burrs on the installation mold for the oil seal. Burrs can scratch the main lip during installation on the brake plate, leading to oil leakage when the transmission starts. Therefore, regular equipment maintenance is required to ensure a smooth mold surface.
2. When tightening the oil seal, ensure that the center of the press head is perpendicular to the center of the housing bearing hole to avoid damaging the outer ring rubber of the oil seal, especially near the edge of the housing oil seal hole.
3. The oil seal should be pressed below the plane of the housing oil seal hole, preferably slightly lower than the chamfer of the housing oil seal hole, and maintained under pressure for 2-5 seconds to prevent the oil seal from rebounding and increasing the risk of leakage.
4. When installing the oil seal, it is essential to wear clean gloves. The gloves must not have aluminum chips or other sharp foreign objects, and the workbench where the oil seal is placed should also be kept clean to prevent sharp foreign objects from adhering to the oil seal and scratching the main lip or outer ring.

5. Proper application of grease is crucial. Excessive grease application may result in melted grease flowing out of the transmission, leading customers or employees to mistakenly believe there is a leak, commonly known as "false oil leakage."
